Crab shell contains chitin, which stimulates chitinolytic microorganisms in the soil. These microbes enhance nutrient cycling while also suppressing certain chitin-containing pathogens like nematodes and fungi. Chitin also stimulates induced systemic resistance in plants – this is essentially an immune system boost.
